Does your Center perform intrauterine inseminations with donor sperm? For patients living far away from Barcelona, the Center recommends IVF for two main reasons: pregnancy rates are higher and the inconveniences of traveling reduced. |

How is the stimulation protocol selected?
The main criteria used to select the stimulation protocol are patient's age, the morphology of the ovaries, Day 3 hormonal test values, body weight, response to stimulation in previous cycles -if any- and our own experience.
At our Center we consider of paramount importance the selection of the medication regimen most suitable for each patient. Standard treatment criteria are avoided. Each patient has her unique characteristics that should be taken into consideration when selecting the stimulation protocol.
The usual stimulation protocol involves the administration of a GnRH agonist by nasal spray and daily subcutaneous injections of gonadotropins.
When does the second appointment take place?
After 8 to 10 days of treatment, blood tests and vaginal ultrasound are performed to monitor the diameter of the follicles in the ovary. These tests will continue to be performed until the day of the egg retrieval.
How is the oocyte retrieval procedure performed?
After the patient is put under general sedation, oocyte retrieval is performed with vaginal ultrasound guidance. The entire procedure usually takes 15 minutes. After the retrieval, the patient remains at the Postoperative Surveillance Unit for approximately one hour. After that, the patient can then be discharged. Therefore, oocyte retrieval is an ambulatory procedure. Rest is recommended for up to 24 hours.
How is the embryo transfer performed?
Two or three days after oocyte retrieval, 2 or 3 embryos are transferred to the uterus. The actual number of embryos to be transferred is going to depend on embryo quality and patient's age. Resting at the hotel is recommended during the whole day. The following day the patient is ready to travel.
How long do we have to stay in Barcelona?
Seven to ten days, depending on your response to the stimulation.
